What Makes This Recipe Great

Traditional Chex Mix is beloved for its salty crunch and variety of textures, but many store-bought versions are loaded with refined grains, added sugar, and excess sodium. This homemade version keeps the addictive crunch and savory flavors while using simple, minimally processed ingredients. It’s fully vegan and gluten-free, easy to toss together, and scalable for large batches.

This recipe is versatile: swap ingredients to suit dietary needs or pantry staples, and season the toasted peanuts to dial up the flavor. The result is a snack mix everyone will reach for, with fewer processed additives.

Ingredient Notes

Basic ingredients to assemble this Gluten-Free Chex Mix:

  • Rice Chex cereal or another unflavored gluten-free crunchy cereal.
  • Gluten-free pretzels—mini pretzels work well for even distribution.
  • Popcorn—I like vegan cheese-flavored popcorn for extra savory taste, but plain or lightly salted popcorn is fine.
  • Vegan cheese snacks provide a bold, cheesy crunch; nacho-style puffed snacks are a good choice.
  • Peanuts—use raw or unsalted so you can toast and season them yourself.
  • Spices—smoked paprika and garlic powder give the nuts a smoky, savory boost.
  • Oil or dairy-free butter—a neutral oil or vegan butter helps the spices cling while toasting the peanuts.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except the peanuts and the peanut seasonings.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil or dairy-free butter.
  3. Add the peanuts, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Keep the pan moving—shake or stir continuously—for about 5–6 minutes, or until the peanuts are golden and toasted to your preference. Remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Mix the cooled, seasoned peanuts into the large bowl with the cereal and other snacks. Toss gently with a spoon or your hands until evenly combined.
  5. Serve immediately in a large communal bowl or portion into individual servings.

Ingredient Swaps

If you’re missing something or want to customize the mix, try these alternatives and additions. Choose ingredients that match your flavor preferences and dietary needs.

  • Swap peanuts for almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are an excellent nut-free option.
  • Choose any sturdy, low-sugar cereal if you don’t have Rice Chex—avoid overly sweet cereals for best flavor balance.
  • Replace pretzels with gluten-free croutons, bagel chips, or small crackers.
  • Add sturdy chips like tortilla chips or pita chips for extra texture.
  • Make flavored popcorn at home (for example, miso-butter or furikake-style) to boost savory notes.
  • If short on time, use store-bought seasoned nuts instead of toasting and seasoning your own.

Storage Suggestions

Store any leftover mix in an airtight container or a sealed plastic bag at room temperature. Properly stored, it will stay crisp for up to one week. For longer storage, keep smaller portions sealed to preserve crunch when opened repeatedly.
