Making Sandwich Roll Ups

If you’ve tried grilled cheese roll ups before, the process will feel familiar. For first-timers, here’s what you need and how to prepare the bread so it rolls without tearing.

  • Thick soft white bread – Choose a soft, slightly thick loaf. Thin or crusty breads tend to crack when rolled.
  • Bread knife – Remove the crusts cleanly. Save the crusts for breadcrumbs if you like.
  • Rolling pin – Flatten each slice so it rolls up easily and holds its shape.
  • Filling – Keep fillings light. Overfilling makes rolling difficult and messy.

Filling ideas

These roll ups work with sweet or savoury fillings. The key is to go light and even so the bread doesn’t break or leak. My three favourites are:

  • Bacon – Thin, crispy streaky bacon with a thin spread of ketchup or brown sauce. Use one or two slices per roll.
  • Ham & cheese – Wafer-thin ham, finely grated cheddar and a little Dijon for tang.
  • Peanut butter & jam – Smooth peanut butter and a thin layer of jam for a classic, nostalgic option.

Cooking Sandwich Roll Ups

Toast the roll ups in a non-stick pan with butter until golden and crisp. A few practical tips:

  • Use a non-stick pan so they don’t stick or unravel during cooking.
  • Start seam-side down to help the seam seal in the filling as it warms.
  • Turn frequently with tongs so all sides get evenly browned and crisp.

They’re done when the exterior is golden and crisp and the filling is warmed through. Cook in batches if needed so the pan isn’t overcrowded.

Serving Sandwich Roll Ups

These roll ups are perfect for feeding a crowd, as an after-school snack, or a quick lunch. Savoury versions work well dipped into soup for a cosy combo.

Equipment

  • Bread knife & chopping board
  • Non-stick pan & tongs
  • Rolling pin

Ingredients

Sandwich Roll Ups

  • 4 thick slices of Soft White Bread
  • 1 tbsp Butter

Ham & Cheese (option 1)

  • 8 wafer thin slices of Ham
  • 3/4 cup / 75g finely grated Cheddar
  • 2 tsp Dijon Mustard

Peanut Butter & Jelly (option 2)

  • 4 fairly thin spreads of Smooth Peanut Butter
  • 4 fairly thin spreads of Jam / Jelly

Bacon (option 3)

  • 4-8 thin slices of Streaky Bacon cooked to preference (1–2 per roll up)
  • 4 fairly thin spreads of Ketchup or Brown Sauce

Instructions

  • One by one, slice the crusts from each slice of bread. Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice gently. Spread or layer your chosen filling, then roll tightly but carefully so the bread holds together.
  • Melt 1 tbsp butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the roll ups seam-side-down first, rotate them in the butter and turn frequently with tongs until golden and crisp all over. Serve warm.

Notes

a) Bread – Use soft white sandwich bread. Avoid firm or seeded loaves that tear or won’t roll. Slightly thicker slices are easier to work with.

b) Fillings – Don’t overload the bread. Too much filling will make rolling difficult and can leak during cooking. Start light and adjust after the first couple of rolls.

c) Make ahead – These are best fresh, but leftovers can be cooled, refrigerated for a couple of days, then reheated in a dry pan or air fryer.

d) Calories – Nutrition shown is based on one ham and cheese roll up.
