Octopus Cupcakes – These adorable, googly-eyed cupcakes are ideal for an under-the-sea celebration. Cute, simple to make, and sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike.

I enjoy themed parties and all the creative ideas that come with them. Browsing party inspiration can be both fun and a little silly — so many kids’ parties look more elaborate than grown-up events. If you like themed celebrations, crafting a few decorations and making themed treats yourself can both reduce cost and add a personal touch. These octopus cupcakes are a great example: they look impressive but are straightforward to make at home.

Crafting Octopus Cupcakes
Being a little crafty helps when planning a themed party. If you or a friend enjoys crafting, you can pair homemade decorations with themed treats to create a cohesive look. These octopus cupcakes pair bright buttercream frosting with simple marshmallow octopus toppers. The process involves baking basic cupcakes, whipping up a smooth buttercream, piping a soft swirl for the body, and topping each cupcake with a chocolate-dipped marshmallow decorated as the octopus head.

Octopus Cupcakes
These cupcakes are fun to make and easy to adapt. You can use store-bought cake mix and premade frosting if you want to save time, or make everything from scratch for a fresher flavor. Colors can be adjusted to match your party palette — blue, teal, purple, or even green frosting work beautifully for the ocean theme. The marshmallow octopus heads are dipped in colored candy melts and adorned with candy eyes for a playful finish.
If you are planning an under-the-sea celebration, consider making a selection of themed treats. Homemade desserts like these octopus cupcakes offer charm without a big price tag, and they are simple enough to prepare in batches for a small gathering or a larger party.

- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup (149g) sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup (113g) butter, melted
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup (114g) sour cream
Buttercream
- 3/4 cup (170g) butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup (118ml) vegetable shortening
- 3–4 cups (339–454g) powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- Dash of milk, if frosting becomes too thick
Octopus Decorations
- Blue or teal food coloring
- Orange food coloring
- Large marshmallows
- Orange candy melts plus a little vegetable shortening
- Candy eyes
Equipment
- Mixing bowls
- Electric mixer
- Muffin pan and cupcake liners
- Piping bags and tips (large tip for body, small round for legs)
- Small pot or microwave-safe bowl for melting candy melts
Instructions
Cupcakes
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, combine eggs, melted butter, vanilla, and sour cream until smooth.
- Gradually add half the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stir to combine, then add the remaining dry mixture and mix until just incorporated.
- Fill lined muffin cups a bit more than half full. Bake 14–16 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before decorating.
Buttercream
- Beat room-temperature butter and shortening until light and fluffy, about 1–2 minutes.
- Add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating slowly until incorporated. Add enough to reach your desired frosting consistency.
- Beat in vanilla. If the frosting is too thick, add a splash of milk; if too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
- Divide the frosting: reserve about two-thirds for the ocean-colored bodies and one-third for the orange legs.
- Tint the larger portion blue or teal, and tint the smaller portion orange. Mix until evenly colored.
- Place the blue frosting in a large piping bag fitted with a large star or round tip. Pipe a stacked spiral from the outside toward the center to create a smooth, rounded body.
- Place the orange frosting in a separate piping bag fitted with a small round tip. Pipe four legs on each side of the cupcake, then add the octopus body atop the legs.
Marshmallow Octopus Heads
- Melt orange candy melts with a small amount of vegetable shortening over low heat or in short intervals in a microwave, stirring until smooth.
- Using a fork, dip one marshmallow at a time into the melted candy, spooning chocolate to fully coat. Tap off excess and place on wax paper or a silicone mat to set.
- Before the coating sets completely, attach two candy eyes using a tiny dab of melted candy as glue. Hold briefly until secure. Let the dipped marshmallows set fully.
- Place a marshmallow head on top of each piped cupcake to finish the octopus look.
Notes
You can simplify this recipe by using a boxed cake mix and store-bought frosting, then coloring and piping the frosting as directed. For sturdier marshmallow heads, chill briefly after dipping. Piping tips and decorating supplies are optional but help create cleaner shapes. All times and yields are approximate and depend on equipment and portion sizes.
