Homemade Coffee Creamer Recipes with Dairy-Free Options

Mmmm… warm, delicious coffee gets me going every morning. It’s not just the caffeine — it’s the ritual: a hot cup signals the start of the day and helps me jump into tasks. Sometimes I even have a small afternoon top-up when I need another push.

My husband didn’t drink coffee until we had our daughter, and now he drinks more than I do. At first it was necessary because of late-night wake-ups, but now it’s mostly habit. Caffeine can be addictive, but when enjoyed in moderation coffee can be a pleasant part of the day.

Here’s our favorite homemade coffee creamer that works with dairy or dairy-free milk. It’s naturally sweetened with honey, though I often skip the sweetener. If you tolerate dairy you can substitute cream or half-and-half for the coconut milk.

We decided to avoid dairy for health reasons: my husband’s ulcerative colitis reacts to it, and I notice it affects my arthritis and skin. Avoiding dairy has helped our whole family feel better.

Ingredients

  • 1 can Coconut Milk
  • 3 tbs honey (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, gently warm the coconut milk with the honey, stirring until combined. Do not boil.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon.
  3. Pour a splash into your coffee, stir, and enjoy.
  4. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to one week; shake before using.

Notes

If using full-fat canned coconut milk, some separation and small fat clumps are normal. Shake or stir the creamer; the fat will melt into hot coffee and add a rich texture.
