On a wide, bustling street in the heart of a lively city you’ll find a small slice of dessert heaven.
This sweet spot in Belgrade is called Mamma’s Biscuit House — an ironic name, since it doesn’t actually sell biscuits.
I first discovered this gem on a warm evening while wandering Belgrade after dinner. We were still craving something sweet when we remembered passing this place earlier. One glance at the glass display cases was enough to tell me it was exactly what I wanted: an inviting selection of cakes, chocolates and marzipan confections that promised the perfect after-dinner treat.
I chose a slice of chocolate torte, served warm with a scoop of ice cream and garnished with fresh berries and berry sauce. It was decadently gooey and exactly the kind of indulgence I’d been craving. I was a little surprised the extras weren’t listed on the menu or offered as options, which might be important for anyone with dairy or fruit allergies. For me, though, the warm, fudgy cake was heaven after months without a good slice of hot chocolate cake.
My companion Scott ordered two of the shop’s small signature confections — one shaped like a Smurf and another like a little pig. These treats hide a delightful homemade marzipan-style filling made from almonds and walnuts. The fillings were richer and more complex than I expected, and each character was finished with a different coating; the Smurf’s hat had a hint of white chocolate, for example.
Mamma’s Biscuit House offers a selection of gluten-free desserts alongside an extensive array of small chocolates and marzipan sweets and several signature cakes. They also make custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions. I didn’t have an event to order a whole cake for, so I happily settled for my slice of chocolate torte.
The cafe features a covered outdoor seating area with a bar that faces the main street. They serve an appealing selection of coffee and chocolate drinks — tempting creations I have yet to try, but that looked delicious from what I saw.
If you find yourself in Belgrade and need a sweet fix, Mamma’s Biscuit House is well worth a visit. It’s likely to satisfy your cravings.
