How to make a pumpkin candy holder

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to share easy, reusable pumpkin projects. I love decorating craft pumpkins every fall because they’re durable and can be refreshed year after year. Inspired by cauldron-themed treats, I turned a craft pumpkin into a spooky cauldron that doubles as a candy holder.

This DIY Cauldron Pumpkin Candy Holder is fun to assemble and customizable. Fill it with classic Halloween candy or swap in non-candy treats for allergy-friendly trick-or-treaters. The project uses simple supplies—painted craft pumpkin, Styrofoam balls for the bubbling brew, green glitter for sparkle, and vinyl flames for added drama.

Cauldron Pumpkin

To build the cauldron pumpkin, I used a black craft pumpkin, but you can paint a faux pumpkin black with spray or acrylic paint. The lid is cut off so the pumpkin becomes a bowl for candy. Styrofoam balls in several sizes are glued around the opening to mimic a bubbling witch’s brew; each ball is coated with Mod Podge and green glitter for shimmer. Orange vinyl flames are applied to the base of the pumpkin to create the look of fire licking up from beneath the cauldron.

Once assembled, the pumpkin is filled with treats and placed on display for trick-or-treat night. It’s a great piece of Halloween décor that stores easily and can be reused for future seasons.

Below is a straightforward tutorial and a short video that walks through the steps.

  • Cut the top off the pumpkin with a craft knife to create a bowl. Cut a couple of inches away from the stem so the opening is wide enough for candy and decorations.
  • To make the bubbling brew, push a toothpick into each Styrofoam ball to hold it while you brush on a thin layer of Mod Podge. Sprinkle fine green glitter over the glued surface until fully covered. Place the balls on a foam block to dry. Allow a few hours for them to set.
  • While the glitter dries, cut vinyl flames using a cutting machine. The example used a flame design sized to about 5–6 inches tall, but adjust to fit your pumpkin. Cut the flames a bit larger than you expect and apply them slightly underneath the pumpkin so they peek out from the base. Use transfer tape if needed, or apply the vinyl like stickers. Continue until the bottom edge is covered in flames.
  • Once dry, hot-glue the Styrofoam balls around the pumpkin opening, starting with the largest and filling gaps with medium and small sizes for dimension. Arrange the balls so they appear to be spilling down the side, creating a bubbling cauldron effect.

DIY Pumpkin Candy Bowl

  • Fill your cauldron pumpkin with candy or treats to welcome trick-or-treaters.
  • Optional: add witch legs or other props behind or tucked into the candy for an extra whimsical touch. Prop elements can be glued to the pumpkin or placed among the treats for added effect.
